Still not sure if Karate can do all this?

Don’t Take My Word For It.

Read the following real life experience about Tim.

karate-bradley-tim-wilhelmTo whom it may concern,

Hi, my name is Tim Wilhelm and if you’re considering martial arts training for yourself or your child, I’d like to share my personal experience for you to consider. Also I will tell you how you can try it all for FREE. (I will tell you more soon.)

In mid-May of 2002, just a few weeks after my 52nd birthday, my 12-year old daughter proposed taking advantage of a sunny spring day, “Cmon Dad! Let’s go out and shoot some hoops!”

“Sure!” I said, and out we went for some highly competitive 21 foul shot, jump shot, foul shot, jump shot. After just 20 minutes I had to quit. My heart was banging and my breath was labored. My face looked like a tomato, and I was drenched in sweat.

That night, while unable to sleep because my legs were painfully cramping, I asked myself “What the heck has happened to my body? How did I become so old without noticing?” I suddenly faced a conscious choice: either muster the will to get into shape, or accept the ongoing degradation of my fitness, health, and the ability to fully enjoy the remainder of my life.

Why Martial Arts?

Since the age of 5 my daughter had maintained a standing plea, “Please can I go to Karate classes?” With the entire summer of 2002 (and summer break from school) in front of us, I thought perhaps it was time to allow her to take her Karate classes, accompanied by Dad.

I was over 50 years old, overweight, horribly out of shape, and suffered from chronic low back problems — I had a few concerns about committing myself to a new (and likely difficult) routine. I decided to first do some research on the internet about martial arts training, in general.

What I found gave me hope for success:

  1. Martial arts is a good way to build strength, increase flexibility, and began improve overall physical condition without focusing on any of these things. One’s focus is on performing the art, and all the conditioning benefits come about as a natural consequence of learning and practicing the art.
  2. Martial arts training emphasize concentration, self-control and self-discipline, and may have many psychological benefits, such as began enchanced self esteem and decreased anxiety.
  3. On one website discussing Martial Arts for Seniors, I found this quote: “One five time winner of the U.S. national grand championships won his division titles while in his sixties having started his training in karate at forty-seven years old because he was double his health weight and had heart problems.”
  4. I also found this quote: “Activity is the key to recovery from soft tissue back injuries, not extended bed rest, says Dr. Kelly Flannigan of Victoria’s Summit Rehabilitation. Dr. Flannigan is also known for prescribing martial arts techniques to help show clients how to use legs and hips, and not their back.”
  5. Additionally, I found a number of other reports describing the benefits of martial arts training relative to back problems, including an ABC-7-Chicago news report titled Kicking Back Pain.

Why Tri-Star?

Having convinced myself it was in my best interest to begin martial arts training with my daughter, I wrote down the criteria that were important to me in choosing a martial arts school:

  1. I wanted a school that would allow my mature 12-year old daughter and me to take classes together, making for some quality daddy-daughter time;
  2. I wanted a school in which the instructors set good examples for young people, pertaining to positive attitude, respect, courtesy, and other important values;
  3. I wanted a school that focused more on the traditional art form and practical applications of martial arts, as opposed to a focus on competitive sport fighting;
  4. I wanted a school that offered some flexibility in class times that would accommodate my always-changing schedule;
  5. I wanted a school where I was encouraged to push myself to do my best, as opposed to being pushed and pressured to the point of having a heart attack.
  6. I wanted a school that put an emphasis on students’ safety.
  7. I wanted to be taught by instructors who were excellent martial artists themselves.
  8. I wanted to be taught by instructors who were kind, patient, caring and likeable.

Right away, Tri-Star Martial Arts Academy caught my attention. It was affiliated with the International Christian Martial Arts Association (ICMA). While that association title struck me as being somewhat of an oxymoron, it also spoke to the values that are important to me.

I started with a phone call to Tri-Star: “No, you’re not too old-Yes, you can work at your own pace. Sure, we can work it out for your daughter to be in the class with you. Why not come in and observe a class?” Master Brumitt allows you to try it free for two weeks. (more on this coming up.)

Taking advantage of their invitation, I made a visit Tri-Star. Owner and master instructor Duane Brumitt introduced himself with a friendly smile and handshake. Even some of the students gave me friendly greetings. I felt very welcomed and at ease.

As I watched class from warm up exercises into practicing hand and foot techniques, and then into other things, the phrase ” I can do this!” played over and over in my head.

While impressed, I wanted more assurance. I chose three of the adult students, of varying belt ranks, and I called them to ask them specific questions about the school, the instructors, and their personal experiences as students. All three gave consistent, positive and encouraging answers.

I also learned that not only was Duane Brumitt on the Board of Directors of the ICMA, he was also the Board Member in charge of youth development and training. All evidence pointed to the conclusion that Tri-Star Martial Arts Academy met all the criteria I had set down for choosing a martial arts school.

At the end of May, 2002, an old man and his pre-teen daughter became new students at Tri-Star.

The Tri-Star Experience:

That first summer at Tri-Star was just a bit tough. Nobody pushed me, but me. Nonetheless, I knew I’d only get out of it what I put into it, so I did push myself enough to make improvements.

Admittedly, I was a bit sore (especially in my legs) for the whole first month, and I had intermittent aches and pains throughout the rest of the summer. But, as time passed, everything became gradually easier I was becoming more flexible, my endurance was increasing, and I could feel myself moving better, with more balance, and control, and strength. I was getting the results I was looking for!

I also got a few things from my Tri-Star experience I hadn’t considered, nor expected: friendship, kindness, and support from the other students.

Based on my experience, one of the best things about Tri-Star Martial Arts Academy is the quality of the people who are its students and parents of students. The Tri-Star “family” is a great tribe of folks with whom I’ve become proud to be affiliated.

Before & After:

After 2 1/2 years of training at Tri-Star, the results I’ve experienced have significantly exceeded my expectations. I believe this was accomplished because I’ve maintained a steady rhythm of martial arts training; and, because I’ve changed my eating habits eat less, and exercise more!

My former eating pattern included a daily ration of chocolate chip cookies and large chocolate milkshake and cheeseburger on the way home from work.

Then after arriving home, I’d often have a “snack” that amounted to a fourth full meal for the day. Regardless what I might have wanted to believe about myself, the truth is still the truth I ate way too much.

Based on my own experience and honest self-analysis I feel safe in saying that at least 90% of all people who are over weight can change their life by finding and exercising their will to eat less, and exercise more!

A friend asked me, “Do you eat to live, or do you live to eat?” Good question! I didn’t join Weight Watchers, but I did use their Point system to change my dietary lifestyle. I did not “go on a diet.” I made a lifestyle change relative to my eating habits.

Like me, if you have some significant weight to lose, I highly recommend the Weight Watchers Point system, in addition to regular martial arts training.

Here is a few more before-and-after statistics:

karate-bradley-tim-wilhelm-metrixOther changes include:

I used to wear size 38/30 pants, and they were tight (I was preparing myself emotionally to go up to size 40/30); now I wear size 32/30, and they’re just a bit too baggy I love wearing baggy pants!

I used to get winded climbing one flight of steps; now I go up three flights of steps, two steps at a time, and feel energized at the top.

I used to barely be able to bend over and reach below my knees; now I can bend over and put my knuckles on the floor.

I used to worry if I’d be able to walk my young daughters down the aisle some day; now they’ll have to sprint to keep up with me HA!

In Conclusion:

Joining the Tri-Star Martial Arts Academy is one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself, and indirectly for my family, too.

It’s wholesome, it’s fun, it’s practical, it’s great.

The instructors are highly skilled and knowledgeable. The other students are wonderful people. I highly recommend martial arts training for any adult looking to improve their physical condition; and, I can’t speak highly enough about Tri-Star. If you’re looking for the best martial arts school in our area, you’ve already found it: Tri-Star Martial Arts Academy in Bradley, Illinois.

One final note for parents:

When we started at Tri-Star 2 ? years ago, my 12-year old daughter weighed 152 lbs. She’s always been extremely bright and just as pretty as her Momma; but, she was self-conscious about her weight, and I felt sorry that she had to cope with self-image and self-esteem issues.

Now, at 14 years old, she weighs 128 lbs. She’s still extremely bright, and she’s still just as pretty as her Momma; but now her self-image is completely different she “kicks butt,” and she’s proud of it.
