martial arts Bradley IL AI at Home: Creative Ways to Use AI With Your Family

In Episode 14 of The Tri-Star Podcast, Professor Brumitt and Professor Beane, Martial Arts Bradley, IL, professionals break down a healthier, more creative way to think about AI at home.

AI is one of those topics that can feel exciting and intimidating at the same time. Some parents hear “AI” and immediately think:

  • Cheating
  • Screens
  • Bad influences
  • Kids getting lazy

And honestly? We understand the hesitation.

But in Episode 14 of The Tri-Star Podcast, Professor Brumitt and Professor Beane take a different angle:

AI doesn’t have to replace thinking, parenting, or effort.

Used the right way, it can be a tool that helps families become more creative, more connected, and even more curious.

1) The Right Mindset: AI Is a Tool (Not a Babysitter)

The best way to think about AI is simple:

It’s a tool.

Like: – A calculator – A library – A notebook that never gets tired

In the episode, Professor Beane describes it like a very advanced search tool that can help you generate ideas, explain concepts, and create prompts.

The real danger isn’t AI.

The danger is passive consumption.

If kids only consume content, creativity shrinks.

But if kids co-create with tools, creativity expands.

One of the best lines from this episode:

“AI should make kids more curious, not more dependent.”

That’s the goal.

2) A Real Family Example: Creative Writing Prompts That Actually Work

Professor Beane shared a story that every parent can relate to:

A day off school. Kids full of energy. Parents trying to figure out what to do.

He used AI to generate creative writing prompts for his daughters by giving it:

  • Their ages
  • Their interests
  • A request for 3–4 writing exercises

Then he did something important:

He didn’t hand them a screen.

He brought them to the table with pen and paper.

They picked prompts, wrote stories for 10–20 minutes, and then read them out loud.

Even better? He recorded them telling the stories in his “podcast room,” and the family watched them together later.

That’s not outsourcing imagination.

That’s activating it.

And it builds a lot more than creativity:

  • Writing skills
  • Spelling
  • Reading
  • Confidence
  • Family memories

3) Make It Endless: Bedtime Stories That Continue Night After Night

Another fun twist they discussed:

Use AI to create bedtime stories that are:

  • The right length (1–3 minutes)
  • The right age level
  • Built around your child’s ideas

You can even ask AI to include:

  • Your child’s name
  • A favorite hobby
  • A “to be continued…” ending
  • 2–3 questions to ask after the story

Then the next night:

“Continue the story.”

That anticipation is powerful.

It turns bedtime into a tradition instead of a routine.

4) Family Game Night With AI: Interaction, Not Isolation

If you’ve ever tried to play Monopoly with kids, you already know:

It can be… a lot.

In the episode, Professor Brumitt and Professor Beane talk about how AI can help you create family games that match your family’s attention span and interests.

Here are a few ideas they shared:

  • Custom family trivia (vacations, inside jokes, family history)
  • Choose-your-own-adventure stories where the family makes decisions
  • Riddle nights (age-appropriate riddles for kids and adults)
  • Mystery games where AI writes the case and the family solves it

The key line:

“Use technology to create interaction — not isolation.”

And because these games are spoken-word and decision-based, they naturally build:

  • Communication
  • Teamwork
  • Listening
  • Problem-solving

5) Learning Without Boredom: Explain It 10 Different Ways

One of the biggest benefits of AI for families is learning support.

Kids ask “why” a thousand times.

And parents get tired.

AI doesn’t.

Professor Beane shared an example of asking AI to explain a big concept (like “millions”) in a way a child can understand.

They also talked about using AI to:

  • Explain topics “like a cartoon”
  • Use metaphors kids understand
  • Create practice quizzes for upcoming tests

Professor Brumitt tied it to something instructors learn over time:

If kids aren’t getting it, you don’t just repeat the same explanation.

You teach it a different way.

AI can help you do that.

And one of the best lines of the episode:

“The best learning feels like discovery, not homework.”

6) Emotional Intelligence: Practice Before the Moment Matters

This was one of the most practical parts of the episode.

AI can be used as a safe place to practice:

  • Apologizing
  • Being assertive
  • Handling difficult conversations
  • Journaling prompts to explore feelings

A key point they emphasized:

You’re not asking AI to tell you how to feel.

You’re asking it to give you questions that help you reflect — and then you move away from the screen and write it down.

That’s a healthy boundary.

And the martial arts connection is obvious:

You practice before you perform.

7) Family Planning: Offload the Mental Load

AI can also help with the “invisible work” that parents carry:

  • Meal planning
  • Grocery lists
  • Weekly schedules
  • Chore charts
  • Family goals
  • Vacation planning

Professor Brumitt shared how he uses AI for meal planning (including dietary preferences and allergies) and then turns it into a shopping list.

The point isn’t to make families more robotic.

It’s to free up bandwidth.

So you have more energy for what matters:

Your kids.

8) The Guardrails That Matter

Before you try any of this, keep the boundaries clear:

  • AI is not a babysitter
  • AI is not a substitute for thinking
  • AI is not a moral authority
  • Kids should use it with parents (co-use)
  • Creativity should come before convenience

AI isn’t going away.

So the best approach is learning how to use it wisely.

The Family Challenge

Here’s your challenge for this week:

Pick one idea from this episode and try it.

Not scrolling. Not watching. Not consuming.

Creating.

A story. A game. A plan. A reflection. A lesson.

One creative moment — together.
