A room full of eager participants and their families. Lots of excitement. It’s 7-year-old Martin’s turn to break his board.
Karate Master Mr. Beane: “Martin, what does your board represent?”
Martin: “I’m having trouble controlling my temper. So, my board says ‘temper’ in these big letters… And I’m going to smash through it. I will be defeated by my temper!”

It’s 42-year-old Rebecca’s turn to break her board and with her husband watching…
Karate Master Mr. Kent: “Rebecca, what does your board represent?”
Rebecca: “I have difficulty with getting things done. Unfortunately, I have been a procrastinator all my life. So, my board says ‘procrastination’. I will breakthrough this habit and triumph over my procrastination!”
Dear friends,
My name is Duane Brumitt… I am the owner of Tri-Star Martial Arts Academy. As you may know, “Tri-Star Martial Arts Academy” has a long tradition of community service. In addition to our commitment to empowering our friends and neighbors by developing character skills like self-confidence, self-control, positive outlook, courage, and perseverance, we have also reached out to those in our community whose needs are more centered around basic survival.
For example, for 12 consecutive years, “Tri-Star martial arts Academy” conducted an annual Kick-A-Thon for the Easter Seals Telethon. Raising thousands of dollars for local families needing services. You may also know that over the years, we have contributed to Harbor House as well.

Background…
In his very last family picture, Sam Myers (second to left) leapt alongside his parents, brother and sister. The 19-year-old appears to be pumping his arms in the air, shouting with joy. The photo now hangs above the Myers family’s fireplace.
Sam committed suicide on December 10, 2016, after battling obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety and bipolar disorder for years. Since then, the Manteno family has been piecing itself together. To continue his legacy they have started the Samuel R. Myers Foundation for Suicide and Mental Health Awareness.
“We are trying to make something beautiful from ashes,” Kathi Myers said. “No matter what we do, our son will never be here again. Our suffering doesn’t change, but our goal with the foundation is to make sure another family doesn’t suffer what we have.”
The nonprofit organization has three goals: To further educate school employees and police about mental health, provide scholarships to Manteno High School students and support legislation that mandates mental health training.
