Picture this…

A room full of eager participants and their families. Lots of excitement. It’s 7-year-old Martin’s turn to break his board.

Karate Master Mr. Beane: “Martin, what does your board represent?”

Martin: “I’m having trouble controlling my temper. So, my board says ‘temper’ in these big letters… And I’m going to smash through it. I will be defeated by my temper!”

Another…

It’s 42-year-old Rebecca’s turn to break her board and with her husband watching…

Karate Master Mr. Kent: “Rebecca, what does your board represent?”

Rebecca: “I have difficulty with getting things done. Unfortunately, I have been a procrastinator all my life. So, my board says ‘procrastination’. I will breakthrough this habit and triumph over my procrastination!”

Dear friends,

My name is Duane Brumitt…  I am the owner of Tri-Star Martial Arts Academy. As you may know, “Tri-Star Martial Arts Academy” has a long tradition of community service. In addition to our commitment to empowering our friends and neighbors by developing character skills like self-confidence, self-control, positive outlook, courage, and perseverance, we have also reached out to those in our community whose needs are more centered around basic survival.

For example, for 12 consecutive years, “Tri-Star martial arts Academy” conducted an annual Kick-A-Thon for the Easter Seals Telethon. Raising thousands of dollars for local families needing services. You may also know that over the years, we have contributed to Harbor House as well.

Break All Barriers Benefit

For The Samuel R. Myers Foundation

Background…

In his very last family picture, Sam Myers (second to left) leapt alongside his parents, brother and sister. The 19-year-old appears to be pumping his arms in the air, shouting with joy. The photo now hangs above the Myers family’s fireplace.

Sam committed suicide on December 10, 2016, after battling obsessive compulsive disorder, anxiety and bipolar disorder for years. Since then, the Manteno family has been piecing itself together. To continue his legacy they have started the Samuel R. Myers Foundation for Suicide and Mental Health Awareness.

“We are trying to make something beautiful from ashes,” Kathi Myers said. “No matter what we do, our son will never be here again. Our suffering doesn’t change, but our goal with the foundation is to make sure another family doesn’t suffer what we have.”

The nonprofit organization has three goals: To further educate school employees and police about mental health, provide scholarships to Manteno High School students and support legislation that mandates mental health training.

Here are the details for the “Break All Barriers” Benefit:

  1. Our goal is to raise money to be given to the Samuel R Myers foundation.
  2. Our efforts will focus on a fundraising event to be conducted Saturday, April 28th at “Tri-Star Martial Arts Academy”
  3. We invite you to participate. Here’s how:
    • The event on Saturday, March 10th will be a “Break All Barriers” breaking event.
    • People who wish to participate will register by calling Tri-Star Martial Arts Academy at (815) 932-5425 or online @ www.BreakAllBarries.com pre-registration ends Friday, April 20th but regisrtation ends Friday, April 27th… Both registrations end at 12pm.
    • After registering, each person will receive a call back to schedule a time for their board breaking to happen.
    • At the event, participants will be coached in the fundamentals of breaking. After receiving this coaching, each participant will have the opportunity to break their board.
    • All boards will be the appropriate size for the person participating. We will have a special “styrofoam board” for those who are not ready to break a real board… Or for anybody who would like to do a “Symbolic Break!” Martial art experience is NOT necessary!
  4. All ages are welcomed. Remember, some people will be doing “symbolic breaks”…No martial arts experience is necessary!
  5. The event is called “Break All Barriers” because Tri-Star Martial Arts Academy will be teaching participants that breaking a board is a great way to prepare people for overcoming fears and barriers!
  6. In fact, each participant is encouraged to decorate their board with things that represent their biggest barrier. For example, the participant might use a marker to turn her board into a “procrastination” board… Or a “control my temper” board… Or a “manage my time effectively” board! Decorating material will be provided.
  7. What if you want more? Participants may register for more than one board if they wish.
  8. There will be upgrade options for participants that are 18 years or older who want to break a brick.
  9. All funds, minus the cost of the boards and/or bricks, will be given directly to the Samuel R Myers foundation.
  10. If you have any questions, just call Tri-Star Martial Arts Academy at (815) 932-5425
