Bourbonnais karate: 7 ways to build focus (without constant reminders)

If you feel like you say “Eyes on me” or “Pay attention” 47 times a day… you’re not alone. For a lot of families, focus isn’t a “my kid doesn’t care” problem—it’s a skills problem.

That’s why I love talking about Bourbonnais karate in the context of everyday parenting. Not as a magic fix, and definitely not as a “toughen them up” thing—but as a practical, repeatable system that helps kids practice attention, self-control, and follow-through in a way that actually sticks.

1) Focus grows when the goal is clear (and small enough to win)

A lot of kids can’t focus because the target is fuzzy: “Behave.” “Listen.” “Do better.” That’s overwhelming.

Instead, try giving a single, specific goal:

  • “Put your shoes in the basket.”
  • “Show me quiet hands for 10 seconds.”
  • “Read one page, then check in.”

In our Tri-Star studio, we do the same thing. Kids aren’t asked to be perfect—they’re asked to hit the next small target. Repetition builds competence, and competence builds confidence.

Parent win: Clear goals reduce power struggles because your child knows exactly what “success” looks like.

2) “Listening” is a physical skill (not a personality trait)

Some kids want to listen… but their body is doing 12 other things. So we teach listening like a drill:

  • still stance
  • eyes up
  • hands quiet
  • respond on cue

At home, you can mirror this with a simple “ready position” before instructions. For example: “Show me ready body—then I’ll tell you.”

Over time, kids learn that focus has a shape. And once they can build the shape, they can repeat it.

3) Transitions are where focus falls apart (so plan for them)

Most “not listening” happens during transitions: leaving the house, starting homework, turning off a screen, getting ready for bed.

Two helpful tools:

  1. Preview the next step: “In 5 minutes, we’re switching to shoes.”
  2. Use a short bridge routine: a timer, a checklist, or a “first/then.”

Martial arts classes are basically a series of transitions—line up, partner up, switch drills, reset. Kids get coached through those moments again and again, which makes transitions feel safer and more predictable.

Parent win: Less chaos in the “in-between” moments.

4) Kids focus better when they feel successful (not criticized)

If your child hears corrections all day, their brain starts bracing for “I’m doing it wrong.” That anxiety can look like silliness, avoidance, or arguing.

Try a 3:1 ratio:

  • three quick positives (“Nice start,” “Good effort,” “Thanks for trying”)
  • one clear correction (“Now slow down and finish the last step”)

This is a big part of Tri-Star’s coaching style. We correct, but we also celebrate progress—because kids who feel safe will keep trying.

Social proof moment: One parent told us, “The staff goes above and beyond.” That kind of encouragement is often what helps a child stay engaged long enough for focus to grow.

5) Movement is fuel for attention (especially for busy brains)

Some kids aren’t “distracted”—they’re under-moved.

Before a focus task, try a 2-minute movement reset:

  • wall push-ups
  • crab walk to the kitchen
  • 10 jumping jacks
  • carry a laundry basket

Physical activity helps kids regulate emotions and energy, which makes attention easier. In class, we build that into the structure: move, reset, listen, try again.

And no—your child doesn’t need to be athletic. There’s no fitness or coordination required to start. We build those skills step-by-step.

6) Delayed gratification is a focus superpower (and it can be trained)

Focus isn’t just “pay attention.” It’s also “stay with it when it’s hard.”

At home, practice delayed gratification in tiny ways:

  • “Finish two problems, then snack.”
  • “Put toys away, then we pick a show.”

In martial arts, belt progression teaches delayed gratification in a healthy way. Kids learn: effort today leads to progress later. That lesson is gold for school, chores, and emotional control.

7) Consistent expectations beat intense lectures

Most kids don’t need a longer lecture. They need a consistent pattern:

  • expectation
  • attempt
  • feedback
  • repeat

That’s why structured environments work so well. In the studio, respect rituals (like how we line up, how we respond, how we treat partners) reinforce behavior expectations without yelling or shaming.

Over time, kids start to internalize the standard: “This is how I show self-control.”

Tri-Star advantage: focus + character, not just kicks and punches

Tri-Star isn’t about turning kids into fighters. It’s about helping them become confident, respectful, resilient humans.

Kids practice focus through:

  • short listening drills that build attention stamina
  • partner work that strengthens social confidence
  • structured challenges that teach perseverance
  • positive mentorship that builds leadership
  • public wins (like stripes and belt moments) that build self-esteem

It’s the consistency that makes the difference—because kids don’t just hear the lesson once. They live it.
