Episode 11 | Leadership Through Words and Tone (Part 1 of 2)

Communication isn’t just something we do—it’s something we lead with.

If you’re a parent, a spouse, a coach, a manager, or anyone who works with people (so… all of us), your words and your tone are shaping outcomes every single day. They shape your child’s confidence. They shape the culture at work. They shape whether a conversation turns into connection… or conflict.

In Episode 11 of The Tri-Star Podcast, Professor Brumitt and Professor Beane begin a two-part Bible study on communication—because Scripture doesn’t just tell us what to say. It teaches us how to say it, when to say it, and sometimes even when not to speak at all.

Why this matters for parents (and leaders)

One of the biggest takeaways from this episode is simple:

Communication is leadership in miniature.

Every word is an instruction. Every tone is a signal. And the people closest to you—especially your kids—are learning how to handle life by watching how you handle conversations.

That’s why we’re grounding this series in Scripture. The Bible is God’s communication to us, and it’s filled with timeless principles that still apply in the middle of real life: busy mornings, sibling arguments, workplace stress, and hard conversations.

Principle #1: Wisdom before words (Proverbs 18:13)

Proverbs 18:13: “Answering before listening—that is folly and shame.”

This one hits hard because it’s so common. We hear the first few words someone says, and our mind starts building a response before they even finish.

Professor Beane describes it as being “in the room” while someone talks, but mentally you’re already preparing your comeback. At that point, you’re not listening—you’re waiting.

Professor Brumitt adds a simple reminder:

God gave you two ears and one mouth—listen twice as much as you speak.

What this looks like at home

Parents see this all the time. A child starts explaining what happened, and we jump in with assumptions:

  • “I know what you did.”
  • “Don’t lie to me.”
  • “Here’s what’s going to happen.”

But when we answer before listening, we often end up arguing about the wrong thing.

Professor Brumitt points out that right before Proverbs 18:13, Scripture talks about humility:

Humility comes before honor.

In other words: if you want a better conversation, you have to be humble enough to listen first.

A martial arts connection: focus before movement

At Tri-Star, students learn focus before movement. Speed without awareness creates mistakes.

Communication works the same way:

  • Focus (listen) before you move (speak).
  • Understand before you correct.

If you want a simple practice tool from the episode, try this:

  1. Let them finish.
  2. Pause.
  3. Ask a clarifying question.

Even one extra beat can change the whole direction of the conversation.

Principle #2: Grace and salt (Colossians 4:6)

Colossians 4:6: “Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt…”

Professor Brumitt and Professor Beane break this down in a way parents can actually use:

  • Grace = compassion and kindness
  • Salt = truth, clarity, and firmness

The point isn’t to be “soft” all the time or “harsh” all the time.

The point is balance.

Kids don’t rebel against truth—they rebel against tone

One of the strongest lines in the episode:

Kids don’t rebel against truth as much as they rebel against tone.

Truth is truth. But tone can either invite a child into growth—or shut them down.

Professor Beane also makes a key parenting distinction:

A parent-child relationship is not a friend-friend relationship.

You can be warm. You can be kind. But you’re still the leader—and leadership requires standards.

A real-life example: Jesus and the woman at the well

Professor Brumitt brings up Jesus’ interaction with the woman at the well.

Jesus didn’t avoid truth. He didn’t “soften” it into something meaningless.

But He delivered truth with compassion—so much so that she left feeling changed, not crushed.

That’s grace and salt together.

Principle #3: The tongue sets direction (James 3:4–5)

James 3:4–5: “…The tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts… Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.”

Professor Beane describes the tongue as the steering wheel of your life.

Professor Brumitt expands it:

Not just your life—your words affect other people’s lives too.

A kind word can echo for years.

A careless insult can echo for decades.

Respect for personality, not position

Professor Brumitt shares a leadership principle he’s taught for years:

“I want my students to respect me for my personality, not my position.”

That only happens when your words and tone consistently build trust.

He also gives a powerful reminder:

You can say the same words, but not the same phrase.

Meaning: tone changes everything.

Principle #4: A gentle answer turns away wrath (Proverbs 15:1)

Proverbs 15:1: “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

This is one of the hardest principles to live out—especially when someone comes at you “full force.”

But in the episode, Professor Brumitt frames it in a way martial artists understand:

Verbal and emotional Aikido.

You don’t collide with force. You redirect it.

De-escalation is strength

A gentle answer isn’t weakness.

It’s control.

And one of the best de-escalation tools is a well-timed question.

Professor Brumitt points out something we all know is true:

When someone asks you a question, your mind can’t help but try to answer.

That’s why questions can slow down a heated moment and bring someone back to thinking.

A practical parenting script

Here’s an example from the episode (and a good one to practice):

  • “I see some big feelings right now. I wonder what your body needs.”

Then you leave space.

You don’t rush to solve everything immediately. You let them process.

A powerful moment: asking for forgiveness

Later in the episode, Professor Brumitt shares a key parenting leadership move:

If you blow up, apologize.

But not just “I’m sorry.”

Ask:

“Will you forgive me for…”

That phrasing takes ownership, models humility, and teaches kids what repair looks like.

A preview of Part 2 (coming next)

This is Part 1 of a two-part conversation.

In Part 2, Professor Brumitt and Professor Beane will go deeper into Jesus’ example as the master communicator—and how to apply those lessons in everyday life.

Your challenge for the week

Pick one principle from this episode and practice it intentionally:

  1. Listen fully before responding.
  2. Balance grace and salt.
  3. Watch your tone—words stick.
  4. Use gentle answers and questions to de-escalate.
