It’s A Scary Headline To Imagine, But It’s Becoming More The Norm!
Are You Or Your Loved Ones Prepared For An Active Shooter, God Forbid It Happens To You?
Professor Duane Brumitt

Many people simply don’t want to think about something so horrible because it makes them feel helpless. But I am going to show you that there are many things you can do.
You may have many advantages that you don’t even know about. Even a basic understanding and education in this area can save lives.[/text_block]

Imagine that there is an active shooter situation happening…
A person that you love and cherish—maybe your friend, maybe your child, maybe your spouse—is cowering behind a desk or table or behind a small wall, and they’re curled up in the fetal position hoping it all goes away.
I know that even imagining something like this is happening or could happen is not pleasant. But bear with me here…
Hypothetically, let’s now imagine that you have the power to speak to your loved one at this moment. You magically appear next to them in the last 10 seconds of the gunman’s approach and he’s moving toward them, still firing his weapon and looking for victims.
If you had 10 seconds to speak to your loved one and say something, what would you say?
Why am I giving you this scenario? Because there are many individuals in this world, from politicians to news anchors to everyday people who have zero tactical training or education, who say “Lie there, do nothing, let it just happen. Play dead. If you don’t get chosen that’s great.”
Just sitting there while someone who is randomly killing innocent people and approaching you is a form of suicide. You are one of those innocent people he’s looking for, and you will get killed.
He doesn’t know you, he doesn’t care about you, and he’s already decided to die when this is over. There’s nothing you’re going to do to change his mind.
Very few things can happen to stop him, and those things are him running out of ammo, his gun jamming, or someone engaging him and overpowering him. Other than that, you’re just one of the many innocent people that he’s decided to kill.[/text_block]
[op_liveeditor_element data-style=””][text_block style=”undefined” align=”left” font_size=”18″ font_color=”%23000000″]And if you think that waiting for the first responders is the way to go then look at these stats:
- on average active shooters kill 1 person per every 15 seconds.
- the national average response time for first responders is 11 minutes.

Listen, there are teachable ways you can learn to maximize your chances of survival. Shootings can happen in many different locations, and they happen at random. You have no way of knowing in advance when or where this is going to happen.
You may be sitting in church on Sunday, minding your own business, and have no idea that a psychopath is armed and heading in your direction like what happened in Charleston S.C.
The first indication you have that something is wrong is when the gunman starts shooting. You have to be prepared to react.
While there are no guarantees, having an established and practiced plan can greatly increase your odds of survival in an active shooter situation. It is far better than doing absolutely nothing, which is what most people are doing right now.
If you think about it… we have a plan for almost every other kind of emergency we might face. We have a plan for when a tornado hits, we have a plan for when the fire alarm goes off too.
But why do so many people and organizations not have a plan when it comes to a gunman entering into a public center and opening fire? Well… It’s like I stated at the beginning. Many simply don’t want to think about something so horrible because it makes them feel helpless.[/text_block]
14 dead, 21 wounded | San Bernardino, Calif.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that 14 people are dead and 21 wounded in a shooting at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino. Sources said the two assailants, who were heavily armed and possibly wearing body armor, opened fire on a holiday party. The two attackers, who were married, were killed in a gun battle with police.
9 dead, 9 injured: Roseburg, Ore.
Christopher Sean Harper-Mercer shot and killed eight fellow students and a teacher at Umpqua Community College. Authorities described Harper-Mercer, who recently had moved to Oregon from Southern California, as a “hate-filled” individual with anti-religion and white supremacist leanings who had long struggled with mental health issues. He owned 14 weapons, all purchased legally. Harper-Mercer, 26, killled himself after exchanging gunfire with deputies.
9 dead: Charleston, S.C.
Dylann Storm Roof is charged with nine counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder in an attack that killed nine people at a historic black church in Charleston, S.C.
Authorities say Roof, a suspected white supremacist, started firing on a group gathered at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church after first praying with them. He fled authorities before being arrested in North Carolina.
Keep in mind that it will be the single most horrific event in your life. Nothing will parallel it. Your life will be forever changed. Nothing will even come close to seeing innocent people being shot in killed and you are there in the mix, right in the heart of it.
To have any hope of surviving under conditions like that you and the individuals around you need to have a plan. And if they do not have a plan, then you need a plan.
If you are that person hiding behind a desk in the last 10 seconds of the gunman closing the gap, actively firing, what will you tell yourself? To lay there and get shot? To lay there and just hope it goes away?
I would hope that is not you. I hope you have decided which side of the fence you’re sitting on when it comes to being proactive at this point.
Make the decision to take action rather than simply hoping he goes away… Because he won’t.[/text_block]
What will you learn in this course?
- The reality of the situation
- Proactive versus reactive
- Understanding the shooter’s state of mind

- And much much more…
However, there is no one tactic that will work every single time. We talk about cover, concealment under fire, and other concepts and strategies in this course, you will be reminded that no situation will be exactly like any other situation.
Every scenario will be different. A shooter may strike in a church, shopping center, school, and office, or in the home.
That’s why every scenario will take its own life, thus resulting in different outcomes. It’s up to each individual who finds him or herself in an active shooter situation to decide which strategy or strategies will, under the circumstances, give the best chance for survival.
But one can only do that if they have prior training within different scenarios to choose from. This is something that you can’t leave to chance.
To give an analogy, when you take your car into an auto mechanic you may notice that he doesn’t have just one tool on his workbench. He doesn’t try to fix every problem with one screwdriver, or one hammer.
One customer may come in with a flat tire, while another has a blown engine or a cracked windshield. Each of these specific jobs requires different tools. Any good mechanic will have a variety of specialized tools at his disposal.
Applying this to an active shooter situation, someone could come in with a handgun, or they could come in with a long rifle. They could have just one magazine of rounds for a backpack full.
Someone could come in and have their gun jammed immediately, or continue firing for several minutes. The scenario could unfold in any number of ways. Like the mechanic, you need to be ready for whatever comes your way.
In short, every situation requires different tools and methods, and will result in different outcomes. No one, including us, can guarantee that you will be able to achieve a positive outcome; but the more you learn about what you can do to save yourself in a life-threatening situation, the more tools you will have at your disposal, and the more likely it is that you will be able to save your life and perhaps the lives of others.[/text_block]
