Speed may allow you to arrive at your intended destination; However, along the way, were you able to take note of the things that you may have missed while speeding along the fast lane?

Remember the Saturday morning cartoon with Wily Coyote and the Roadrunner?

“Fast” brings back the figure of the Roadrunner zooming past the obstacles and traps laid out by Wily Coyote.

Speed may allow you to arrive at your intended destination; However, along the way, were you able to take note of the things that you may have missed while speeding along the fast lane? As in driving, flying down the road does not give you enough opportunity to see and enjoy the view. The same can be said about learning to speed read.

Much of what you learn can be acquired through reading. The simple activity of getting in a comfortable chair, sit back and start reading a favorite book opens a new world for you. Reading enables one to tap into all the great minds of past and present.

The more you read, the more knowledge you acquire. In the hopes of reading more, some attempt to learn how to read fast. It is believed that the faster you read, the more you cover.

Speed reading involves using specific techniques and concepts compared with the word-for-word method that we were taught in school. Improving reading speed enables you to cover more pages with the same rate as conventional reading. However, it is important to remember when learning how to speed read, or searching for speed reading instructions, is that you also learn comprehension and retention. Without comprehension and or retention, there is danger that you might miss the important details in the book.

There is a solution for this. Few people are aware of this seldom-talked about technique in speed reading. This is based on the principle that the mind thinks in pictures.

Learning is accelerated when you “see” the whole idea of the write-up or book. Seeing “live pictures” of ideas and thoughts of the writer makes reading experiential and unforgettable. When you see nothing while reading, you learn nothing. Speed reading becomes useless.

This technique is called visualization. Visualization is vital to quick learning. Visualization in reading is like constructing a jigsaw puzzle where pieces are put together to form the whole picture. The whole thing not only “appears,” but actually “comes alive” before you. All of this happen in the realm of the mind.

Just going through the motions of speed reading can give you an obscure picture of the subject matter. However, like a haze, this picture often quickly evaporates into thin air. Speed reading without visual pictures often informs but very seldom impresses.

Impressions last while information changes with time. Past information is easily forgotten in favor of new ones. Impressions change you, and these are stored permanently in the mind.

For learning to become effective, it requires brief pauses to be able to visualize and reflect. Effective learning is not about how fast you can finish reading a book. It is more on how you effectively comprehend the ideas brought forth by the writer.

Visual pictures provide lasting impressions. Go after ideas and how it will enrich people’s existence. Go for lasting impressions and insights that will mold you into better individuals.

Who doesn't want more success? Whatever you've already accomplished, there's always another interesting mountain to climb. If you’re looking for more achievement, you can improve your life

Who doesn’t want more success? Whatever you’ve already accomplished, there’s always another interesting mountain to climb. If you’re looking for more achievement, you can improve your life dramatically with a few simple changes.

Although these suggestions are straightforward, most of them will require constant attention for a little while until they become habitual. Once they become automatic, though, you’ll be thrilled with your progress.

Try these ideas to enjoy greater success:

1. Hang out with successful individuals. You’ll frequently find that you achieve about as much as the people with whom you spend the most time. If you want to be successful, affiliate as often as you can with people who are more successful than you. There are a couple of reasons for this:

2. Adjust your attitude. Successful people usually have a positive attitude. That’s what allows them to move forward aggressively. This is not the same as acting foolishly, however.

You’ll be exposed to a completely different way of thinking and interacting with the world. Very successful people look at many things differently than those who are less successful. Integrating some of these ideas into your own thinking will likely bring you more successes of your own.

You’ll also encounter new opportunities. High-achieving people frequently have all kinds of ventures going on; you never know when they might need a helping hand. You’ll also get to connect with their peer group, who are likely to be very successful as well.

Minor challenges don’t bog them down because they believe that things will work out in the end. They also keep the bigger picture in mind, so minor challenges are just that – minor.

If you want to be wealthy, do you have positive attitudes about wealth and wealthy people? If you want to be healthy, do you have a positive outlook about that? Your attitudes must be congruent with your objectives.

Everything starts internally; seeing outside changes in your life takes time.

3. Be organized and focused. Before you go to bed each night, make a list with all the things you want to accomplish the next day. Doing this at night gives your brain a chance to work on things in your sleep. Also, you’ll feel much better when you can start the day with a clear objective instead of spending time trying to figure out what to do.

4. Have goals. Your brain is tremendously good at finding solutions. You can help it out by doing a good job of outlining and prioritizing your objectives. The simplest way to do this is to write down your goal and include a deadline. Now your brain knows what to work on and when to have it accomplished.

5. Read over your goals at least twice a day to provide mental emphasis that they’re important. We all know how easy it is to get sidetracked by 50 other things and forget all about our goals and plans.

These 4 simple ideas can bring you great power, if you’ll use them to your advantage.

Being successful is really no more challenging than being unsuccessful. Both require specific actions and attitudes applied consistently over a period of time. Make some changes today and give yourself the gift of success.

Looking forward to your comments...

Because all relationships grow and change over time, even if you have a great relationship, there may be times when you feel like your bond could be stronger.

Because all relationships grow and change over time, even if you have a great relationship, there may be times when you feel like your bond could be stronger.

Consider these tips to fortify your partnership:

1. Take your partner’s side. To continue to grow an enriching, loving relationship, consistently advocate for your partner’s position, whether you agree with them or not. If you promise yourself to always be on the same side, then there will be fewer situations that divide you.

Although disagreement can be appropriate, do so with tact and love instead of fighting. Let your differences lead to discussions that help you understand each other better rather than divide you. These types of honest discussions reinforce the love and respect you share.

2. Release past hurts. If you’ve been holding on to emotional pain related to your current partner or a past one, let it go. Keeping the hurt inside can stifle the love and affection you want in your relationship.

If the pain results from your current partner’s actions, resolve the past situation so you can let go of that pain and move forward with your relationship.

Letting go of past hurts allow you to feel freer to love and be close to your partner.

3. Be willing to try something new. If you want to truly connect with your partner, embrace the activities he loves to do. Even though the particular pastime may not be your cup of tea, show willingness to engage in his beloved activities with him.

For example, if your partner invites you to go to an NFL game, you don’t have to be a football fan to go and enjoy yourself. Look at it this way: you’ll be there to share something really special with your love. He’ll be thrilled to have you there and will most likely recognize the sacrifice you made to share the experience with him.

4. Lose the need to be right. Winning arguments with your partner is overrated. After all, what value does being right really have? Insisting that the other person agree that you’re right and they’re wrong does nothing to increase positive feelings or strengthen the bond between you.

Try focusing, instead, on accepting that there will be times when you might be correct and other times when he’s the one who’s right.

Sometimes, these situations can be better resolved by sorting out how you each feel so you can find a middle ground that can bring you closer together rather than determining who’s right or wrong.

5. Celebrate your differences. Allow yourself to again experience the passion that brought you into the relationship. You have a responsibility to keep the flame going, which reinforces your connection. One way to do that is to truly embrace the ways in which you are different.

There are so many wonderful opportunities to ensure your partnership continues to blossom and grow stronger. Use these tips for inspiration to help you cultivate your cherished relationship and watch it thrive under your careful tending.

How often have you run into a leader who’s been successful at guiding others by saying one thing and then doing something different?

How often have you run into a leader who’s been successful at guiding others by saying one thing and then doing something different? Not very often, right? That’s simply because it doesn’t work!

It’s highly likely that principles taught without the right examples being put into practice will eventually fall by the wayside.

Especially if you’re in a position of authority, it is of utmost importance to lead by example if you expect to gain compliance.

Leading by example will ensure these benefits:

1. Support of the principles based on results. For example, if you’re teaching honesty, when people see for themselves that you gain the trust of others by being honest, they will likely see the benefits of being honest themselves.

2. Full understanding of the principles. Just imparting principles to others isn’t always enough. In fact, the majority of people may have a completely different understanding of what’s expected of them.

3. Cohesion and cooperation. This is particularly true whenever team effort is required. When everybody is on the same page, processes, departments and families run more cohesively.

4. Respect. When others can see that you are fully complying with the principles you teach, you’ll ultimately gain their respect.

Disastrous Results of Not Practicing What You Preach

So what happens when you try to teach certain life principles but allow your actions to dictate otherwise?

You’re bound to run into any or all of the following situations:

Those you expect compliance from will very soon grow to resent you, especially if the principles you’re teaching are a challenge for them to perform.

You may end up with a negative reputation as an ineffective leader or teacher as you lose sight of the very actions you teach.

Cases of rebellion will continue to grow as more and more people feel they’re being dictated to instead of led.

How to Start Leading By Example

It’s very easy to outline your expectations; it’s the simplest part of the equation. And that’s a start, because at least you know what the principles are. As they say, “Knowing is half the battle” but in this case, it’s the smaller half!

It may take a lot of effort to really walk the talk and practice the behaviors that you want others to emulate. However, you can get started practicing this positive principle on a daily basis with only a small effort:

Start small and stick to your immediate circle of influence.

Give yourself the opportunity to impart morals and good belief systems on your immediate family and close friends.

Tackle each principle one at a time.

Work hard at allowing it to become an integral part of your everyday life.

Once you’ve mastered one, move on to something else. However, it’s important to be able to give testimony to the fact that there are actually greater benefits to adhering to that particular principle than not adhering. There is an element of fulfillment when you can show others just what kind of actions, thoughts and behaviors contribute to a better, more wholesome outcome.

Walking the talk is a lifelong journey. There may be times that you’ll fall below your own expectations and the principles you aspire to uphold. However, what’s important is that you recognize it and take the necessary steps to get back on track!

I'm eager to hear your comments...

As the school semester draws to an end, most teachers aim to schedule parent-teacher conferences. In these conferences, your child’s teacher will give you valuable information

As the school semester draws to an end, most teachers aim to schedule parent-teacher conferences. In these conferences, your child’s teacher will give you valuable information about how the child is doing academically, socially and emotionally while at school.

Sometimes, teachers share results of various tests and explain what the test scores mean in relation to your child. Also, the teacher hopes to gather helpful information about you. This may include what you think about your child’s level of academic performance and what you may know about what motivates your son or daughter.

By using these meetings to their best advantage, you can help your child enjoy greater success.

These strategies can help you prepare for a successful parent-teacher conference:

1. Be prepared: list your questions. What do you want to know about how your child is doing socially, academically, and emotionally at school? Write down your questions so you don’t forget them. Seek specific information, like:

Why does your son never have math homework?

Are you concerned your child is lagging behind in Social Studies?

Would tutoring help?

Why does your son get detention all the time?

Is your daughter shy at school? Does she have trouble making friends?

2. Arrive on time. You might be surprised at the number of parents who arrive late, expecting the instructor will be waiting, only to find she’s already started the next conference! Yes, your time is valuable. The teacher’s time is too, and she has many more students and families to accommodate.

3. Listen and follow the teacher’s lead. The teacher will have an agenda of everything she is required to review during the parent-teacher conference, and probably some optional items, too. When the conference begins, take the teacher’s direction in terms of how to proceed.

Some instructors want to get through their agenda before entertaining your questions.

Others are willing to suspend their formal review to address your questions and concerns.

Other teachers may simply ask what you would like to accomplish during the conference.

4. Keep in mind that the teacher is on a schedule. Some busy instructors actually need to schedule their conferences every 15 minutes! If you keep questions and concerns concise and brief, you’ll both be less frustrated about what must be accomplished.

5. Inquire about teaching strategies. If you’re curious about how the teacher approaches a certain subject with the kids, your conference is a good time to ask about it.

6. Cooperate with the teacher. For example, if the teacher states she’d like you to email her weekly about Johnny’s math homework, wholeheartedly agree to do it. And then follow through.

Your cooperation with the teacher is integral to the process of ensuring your child gets a good education.

7. Show appreciation. Everyone wants to be recognized for their professional skills. Let the teacher know you notice what she’s doing with your child. Thank her for her hard work.

Do your part to have helpful, informative conferences. After all, you and the teachers are “in it together” when it comes to educating your children. Follow these strategies to have a successful parent-teacher conference, and ultimately, your child will reap the benefits of your efforts.

What about you? What do you think?

Do you envision yourself with health, wealth, and other abundance? In going after your hopes and desires, you might be surprised to encounter your fear of success.

If you find yourself achieving only small, fleeting successes, but the great things you deserve always seem just out of reach, you may be the victim of your fear of success.

Your fear of success may be tough to identify and understand because the causes are frequently hidden from conscious awareness. Your fear may be lurking in your subconscious and you may never even discover that this challenge exists within you without some real probing.

Yet, this fear can cause you to sabotage your pursuit of your most cherished dreams. So how do you find out if your actions are motivated by fear of success?

Is the Fear of Success Sabotaging You?

Think of a goal that you’d like to achieve. Then, take 20-30 minutes and answer the following question: “What will happen if I succeed?” Write down everything you can think of – both good and bad consequences of achieving your goal.

It’s important to take at least 20 minutes to answer the question. Your early answers are likely to be superficial. Simply keep writing for at least 20 minutes. Put down everything that comes to mind. Nothing is too silly or too small. If, after 20 minutes, you’re still getting good stuff, then keep on going.

Suppose your goal is to make $250,000 this year. You might include items like these in your list:

· I’ll be able to pay all my bills.

· I can buy a new car.

· I can go on a vacation.

· I’ll have to pay a lot in taxes.

· My brother will want a loan.

· I don’t know what to do with the money after I’ve got it.

· People will treat me differently.

· I should get a new house. But where would I live?

· My partner will try to spend it all.

· I’ll probably just lose it or invest it incorrectly.

In your excitement, you might quickly write down some of the things you’ve wanted to buy, and, once you have the money, you can. But then, as you delve further into all your feelings about achieving your goal, some of the not-so-positive consequences of your achievement appear on your page.

Some of these consequences may reveal things you fear happening if you really achieved your goal.

Goals are never completely free of fear. Achievement always involves change, and all change involves some apprehension. You might truly desire to be successful, but if the feelings of fear due to the changes outweigh the positive feelings in your mind, progress will be slow and challenging.

How to Eliminate Your Fear of Success

If you can make yourself aware of your apprehensions, you have the opportunity to attack each of them and eliminate them or at least minimize them so that you can make progress.

Looking directly at these fears is very powerful. Fears that are not acknowledged tend to grow stronger. Fears that are examined tend to be minimized, which will help you to take aggressive action towards the completion of a goal.

Ultimately, if you look closely at your fears, you’ll see that the perceived side effects are what often seem scariest when pursing goals. So before you give up on your plans, ask yourself what would happen if you were ultimately successful. Tackle your fears head on and you can start achieving your dreams today!

What about you? What are your thoughts on this subject?

Whether you’re at a party, wedding reception or all-you-can-eat restaurant, you’re surrounded by temptation. Use these suggestions to make healthier food choices and keep the calories under control while you enjoy your meal.

Making Better Food Choices at a Buffet

Browse around first. Scientists at Cornell University studied the differences between how overweight diners approached a buffet versus their thinner counterparts. They found that that 71 percent of leaner people scanned the offerings first to narrow down their choices while heavier diners tended to immediately grab a plate and pile it up.

Load up on vegetables. Most nutritionists recommend devoting half your plate to vegetables and fruits. This is always good for your health and goes a long way toward making any buffet meal lighter.

Learn to count calories. Avoid underestimating the calories in certain foods. Vegetables dishes have a lot of calories once they get breaded and fried or smothered in cheese. Beware of creamy soups and most salad dressings.

Practice portion control. You can usually incorporate your favorite treats into your diet if you keep the portions moderate. A teaspoon of nuts liven up a salad but eating them by the handful could put you over your limit.

Additional Suggestions

Use smaller plates. The vast majority of people make only one or two return trips to the buffet. Smaller dishes will reduce the amount of food you can fit on each trip and make the experience seem more abundant.

Sit at a distance. Make it more challenging to go back for more by sitting on the other side of the room. Avoid lingering around the table where you’ll be in danger of picking at the food for much longer than you intended.

Face away from the buffet. Keeping fried chicken out of mind is easier when you keep it out of sight. Turn your chair in the opposite direction from the dessert selections.

Drink lots of water. Staying well hydrated is good for your overall health and energy levels and helps you to feel full sooner. You’ll save calories compared to drinking alcoholic cocktails, which could also lower your resistance to over-enjoying the chocolate cheesecake.

At social events, focus on socializing. Pay more attention to the guests and less to your plate. Get caught up in conversation and dancing so you’ll forget about wanting to eat more.

Wear fitted clothing. Leave your stretchy long sweaters at home. Clothes that fit closer to your body will help remind you to eat sensibly. Stop yourself before you feel the need to loosen your belt.

Order off the menu. Many restaurants will give you the choice to order off the menu or eat from the buffet. Opt for a single dish if the buffet looks fattening. Even if the buffet costs less, you save money in the long run by staying fit.

Eat more slowly. If you make your food last longer, you’ll have less time to go back for more. Plus, you give your brain a chance to notify your stomach that you’re beginning to feel full.

Above all, keep in mind that “all-you-can eat” is a description, not a challenge. Slow down and be more selective about what you put on your buffet plate. You’ll eat less and enjoy your food more.

Active listening skills are a subtle but effective way to perform better on job interviews. Half of all communication is listening but few of us get any training on doing it well. Fortunately, listening well is relatively simple, and will become automatic once you practice the skills.

Here are some techniques that will help you acquire more knowledge and make a better impression on your prospective employer.

How to Use Active Listening for Your Job Interview

Recognize your limitations. Many studies confirm that we only take in half of what we hear and we forget half of that by the next day. Becoming more attentive often takes some deliberate effort.

Relax your mind. Most people feel anxious about applying for a new job. Take time to quiet your mind and reduce distracting thoughts. Meditate, get a massage, or listen to instrumental music.

Stay alert. Prevent fatigue from sabotaging your interview. Get a good night’s sleep and squeeze in some aerobic exercise beforehand. Sit up straight and dress in layers. Being chilly makes concentration more difficult.

Show your enthusiasm. Successful people often enjoy talking about their work, especially when they have an appreciative audience. Make eye contact and lean toward your interviewer. Let your positive feelings shine through when you describe your past accomplishments and how they relate to the position you’re seeking.

Position yourself as a good fit. Use the information your interviewer provides to home in on the type of candidate they’re after. Explain how your background and skills enable you to contribute and become a valued team member.

Take notes. People listen much faster than they speak. Take advantage of that gap to take notes and collect your thoughts. Jot down keywords and main themes rather than recording every word.

Keep an open mind. It pays to be flexible. Remain neutral to avoid rejecting a new viewpoint or job opportunity before you have a chance to consider it from all angles.

Put yourself in your interviewer’s shoes. Your interviewer may feel uncomfortable too. Empathize with their responsibility to find the right person for the job.

Restate key points. Summarize and paraphrase the most important messages. This will help reinforce their thoughts in your mind and show your interviewer that you are on the same page.

What questions does this raise for you?

When springtime rolls around, thoughts turn to sunny days, warmer weather, and getting motivated to cross tasks off your list of things to do

When springtime rolls around, thoughts turn to sunny days, warmer weather, and getting motivated to cross tasks off your list of things to do. As you look around, you see your neighbors power-washing the driveway and sprucing up their homes.

Even your best friend seems to be infused with energy these days; she’s already cleaned out her closets and waxed her car and it’s only April 1st!

You, on the other hand, have a bunch of tasks weighing on your mind. You’re tired of thinking about them. But which one should you do first? And how can you summon the energy that seems called for this season?

These suggestions can help you painlessly gear up for action:

1. Find peace in the garden. If you like to garden, it’s time to explore the changes that fall and winter brought to your planting spaces. If you’re new to gardening, you can look forward to feeling tranquility when you’re raking, planting and weeding.

Why not start now working in the yard for 30 minutes a day? Gardening is good for your soul and will lead you to achieve in other areas of your life.

2. Deepen connections with your family. Complete projects together instead of alone. Make time to listen to what your kids and partner want to do now that spring’s here. Focus emotional energy on your family.

Spending time with your spouse on a project you both want done is a great way to deepen your connection. You’ll also gain momentum to do other tasks.

Spring is also a lovely time to accomplish something with your kids. You’ll enjoy the opportunity to have some quality time with them as you teach the values of working together on a project.

3. Reach out. Ask for a psychological or physical “push” from a parent or close friend. Maybe your mother loves to do interior painting or your friend is a master at organizing drawers and cabinets.

Asking for help is an exercise in humility and builds character. There’s no shame in acknowledging that you feel challenged to get motivated. Those you care about would love to help. Embrace the support and love you get from them.

4. Help yourself. Plan each week to complete just one task on your list, no matter how small. You’ll build momentum each week to achieve another goal. Give yourself permission and enough emotional space to take it slowly. You’ll feel like a rock star if you keep a steady pace by finishing one task every week.

5. Reward yourself for progress. As you complete those tasks that have been simmering in the back of your mind, remember to reward yourself for your accomplishments.

If Mom helped you paint the kitchen, invite her and Dad over next weekend for a family dinner. Spending some family time together is a special way to thank your mom and enjoy the fruits of your labor.

When you and your spouse spend a day cleaning up the yard or sprucing up the garage, suggest you enjoy an intimate night out the following weekend.

You’ll be continuously motivated to complete more of those spring tasks when you take the time to recognize and reward yourself for what you’ve accomplished.

Some of us will get more charged up about spring’s arrival than others. Remind yourself that it’s okay to move forward at your own pace. Whether you go after your goals a little bit at a time or all at once, your sense of accomplishment will always be there waiting for you when you spring into action.

I'm eager to hear your comments...

Wouldn't you love to dramatically increase the speed at which you read and comprehend? Imagine how many more books you could get through or how much time you could save!

Wouldn’t you love to dramatically increase the speed at which you read and comprehend? Imagine how many more books you could get through or how much time you could save!

Speed-reading isn’t some magical process. Instead, it’s largely good habits coupled with effort. Nearly everyone can increase his reading speed to over 1,000 words per minute when reading content of average difficulty.

If you want to learn to read faster, you’re in the right place. But before you get started, you should measure your current reading speed. You can only assess your improvement if you know where you started.

Grab a book that’s of average difficulty for you, set a timer for 5 minutes and read. When the timer goes off, count the number of words you read and divide by 5. That’s how many words per minute you read currently.

Techniques for Speed-Reading

Cultivate chunking. Chunking is the idea of reading more than one word at a time. Slower readers tend to read one word at a time, while fast readers can read 5 or more words per glance. So someone reading 5+ words per glance is only looking at 2 or 3 spots per line of text.

Avoid sub-vocalization: This occurs when you say to yourself the word that you’re reading. It can be silent (in your head), or you may actually move your lips as if you’re saying the word very quietly. This is very slow, and interferes with speed-reading; the average person can process words in their mind much more quickly than they can speak.

Keep an eye on yourself. Slower readers tend to have undisciplined eye movements. They are all over the page: they backtrack and re-read the same words, and they tend to lose their spot. This is simply bad habits and poor concentration. Good reading speed requires intent and focus. Force yourself to concentrate and keep moving forward.

Set your intention. One of the best ways to learn to speed read is to simply read faster. Even though at first you’ll be reading slightly beyond your ability to comprehend the reading material, pushing yourself trains your eyes and brain to work at a higher rate.

Regularly measure yourself. Once a week, measure yourself to see where you stand. Keep in mind that some books are tougher to read than others. Be sure you’re comparing apples to apples.

Obviously, this is much faster than reading a single word, moving your eyes, reading another word, moving your eyes, and so on.

How do you get better at chunking? Start with two words at once, then move up to three words, and continue in this manner. This technique is more of a habit than anything else. With a little practice, you’ll be reading several words at a glance.

If you’re pushing yourself to 1,000 words per minute regularly, when you fall back to 800 words per minute, you’ll feel like reading is a piece of cake! Just keep pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone.

Speed-reading is really just a collection of good reading habits, intention, and concentration. Anyone can dramatically improve the rate at which they read. Start practicing today and you’ll read faster in no time.
